What is EMDR and How Can it Treat Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders?
EMDR therapy is considered to be a cutting edge treatment because it provides unique solutions to healing traumatic memories. EMDR works by activating both hemispheres of the brain at the same time through bilateral stimulation. This simulation replicates the brain’s natural way of processing traumatic memories and allows for deep healing to take place. EMDR doesn’t require clients to revisit painful memories in vivid detail, which makes it a less harmful alternative to exposure therapies where individuals are required to remember events in a detailed manner in order to heal.
Our EMDR Program:
The overall goal of undergoing EMDR is for individuals to reprocess negative or traumatic memories in a way that they become associated with more positive associations. EMDR Therapy is the first clinically proven approach to treating unprocessed, traumatic memories and initial outcomes on EMDR therapy treatment for individuals suffering from PTSD have shown outstanding positive results.
Specially, EMDR works to treat a variety of mental health disorders, including:
Addiction or Substance Use Disorders
EMDR treats individuals struggling with substance use disorders by targeting negative memories, emotions, and experiences associated with misusing drugs and alcohol that are stored in the brain. EMDR therapy will target these associations and help individuals to reprocess them so they become positive recollections.
PTSD
EMDR therapy was initially designed for individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to the positive impact, EMDR had on treating those with PTSD, the treatment evolved into supporting other mental health conditions where traumatic memories are prevalent.
Childhood Trauma
EMDR therapy has proven effective for treating individuals who suffer from childhood trauma because it allows for individuals to heal without having to discuss their trauma in detail with their therapists, which can be a traumatic experience in and of itself. EMDR provides a safe haven for sufferers of childhood trauma to find relief.
Anxiety
Anxiety is often caused by recurring negative thoughts, emotions and memories about one’s self-worth and value. EMDR can disrupt these thoughts, emotions and memories and replace them with positive, self-validating recollections.
Depression
EMDR therapy has proven to work well for trauma-based depression by healing symptoms and improving stabilization from other causes of depression such as Bipolar Disorder.
