What is Heroin and the Effects of Heroin Use?

Heroin is a drug made of morphine, which is derived from the seed pods of opium poppy plants.  It can be a brown or white powder color, or a black sticky substance known as black tar heroin.  This opioid drug can be injected, snorted, smoked and even mixed with crack cocaine.  Heroin binds to opioid receptors on cells involved mainly in controlling feelings of pain, pleasure, sleeping, breathing, and heart rate. Initially, heroin users typically feel a surge of euphoria. Long-term effects of heroin use can include. insomnia, infection in the heart lining and valves, ascesses, constipation and stomach cramping, lung complications, and sexual dysfunction.

Our Heroin Addiction Treatment Program - What to Expect

WRC’s heroin addiction treatment approach is customized for each individual. We take into account a person’s prior history of heroin misuse, their supportive systems, and personal commitment to living a life in long-term recovery. Participants will undergo a pre-screen to identify the severity of their addiction and mental health issues to see which type of treatment will work best.

Typically, treatment for a heroin addiction begins with a period of medication-assisted detoxification or MAT. This is the first phase of a comprehensive recovery treatment program. Following this, individuals typically continue on by participating in an inpatient, partial hospitalization or outpatient rehabilitation program to improve their chance of a successful recovery. These programs include mental health counseling, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, support groups,  recovery meetings, relapse prevention and aftercare planning.

Clients will work closely with our licensed professionals to develop a customized treatment plan to determine what your path to recovery will look like. We use a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities to treat heroin addiction, which are provided by qualified professionals and aim to create a semantic and sensory experience in order to heal the whole person.
