What is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational interviewing is a therapeutic technique that uses ‘change talk’ which creates a safe space for individuals to verbalize their disappointments, needs, hopes, and desires in order to make transformative life changes.  Qualified motivational interviewers will identify and accept that every individual is at a different level of readiness to change their behavior.  For example, some people may have already thought about making a behavior change but yet they haven’t taken the necessary steps to change it. Most likely this person is experiencing fear over the change and is dealing with an internal struggle that must be addressed in a logical, rational, and caring manner. This is where motivational interviewing comes in. A trained motivational interviewer will help the client to learn how to effectively change the unhealthy behavior in order to not only live a drug-free life but to enhance their overall quality of life and independence.
